Aquifoliaceae. Central and Western Europe. H 9m x L 5m. Z6. Evergreen shrub, slow growing. Dioecious plant with leathery foliage, dark green, shiny, varnish-like on the upper side, with thorny growths very pronounced on the female plants. Spring flowering, white, discreet but very pleasantly scented. Only the female plant bears very decorative bright red berries in autumn and early winter - traditionally used in Christmas decorations. The berries are toxic, however (purgative low dose, causing nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and in higher doses). Holly is usually used in winter decorations, but also in the garden, as an isolated subject or to form hedges. The plant is extremely hardy and withstands harsh conditions. Its dense wood is rare and highly sought for its hardness and aesthetic (light color) and as fuel. The plant is medicinal and finds various applications to human health through its properties: astringent, diaphoretic, diuretics, emetics, expectorant, antipyretic and purgative. Our holly plants are of the wild type obtained from spontaneous seedlings in the natural environment of our farm. For getting berries, plant male and female individuals. 1 plant bare root available all year
