Stevia is an amazing plant. Its sweetening power is so intense (300 times that of sucrose) that it is fast establishing itself as the best natural sweetener and sugar substitute. Recommended for diabetics and those wishing to follow a low calorie diet without depriving culinary pleasure. The leaves can be eaten raw for fun (the children call it the candy plant). Dried and pulverized, they can be used as a natural sweetener. They can also be added to herb tea mixes: they will not only sweeten your teas, they will also add pleasant licorice flavors. Despite big marketing and advertising, many of us have not yet tasted Stevia. The plant is difficult to find in nurseries, take your chance! Stevia is very easy to grow in containers as well as in the garden, but must be protected from slugs and snails - they really love it. Stevia requires full sun, fairly rich soil, and regular watering in hot and dry periods of the summer. By the end of the summer and during the fall, Stevia produces tiny white flowers of no ornamental value. The plant withers away in winter, and needs protection from frost. Each year in April, Stevia will grow again more vigorously from its stump.
