Cucurbitaceae. Japan. L 5m x 0.6m H. Z9. Annual. Potimarron, Red Kuri Squash, or Chestnut-pumpkin is a Japanese gourd initially from Latin America. Very rich in vitamins and highly nutritious, use it for delicious pumpkin soups, pastries and desserts, or as a starchy vegetable with red meats. Its seed is a source of edible oil, the flesh can be used in cosmetics for skin care, and its flowers are a priviledged ingredient in donuts, much better flavoured than zucchini flowers (the potimarron flower also gives lots of pollen to bees and bumblebees, which harvest like crazy). The plant has a few medicinal properties on top of that: diuretics, tonics and anthelmintic. Cucurbita maxima is productive and easy to grow. Red Kuri Squash gives several small to medium decorative fruits per plant. Their flesh is bright orange, tight, sweet, floury, and delicious. Harvest them in the fall before the first frost, they can be stored all winter at room temperature. Sow in April in warm soil and transplant in May when risks of frost end. Full sun exposure, soil enriched with manure for higher yields. Very easy to grow successfully. 1 packet of 15 seeds.
