Cucurbitaceae. Central America. L 10m x 0.6m H. Z10. Annual. The Musk Squash of Provence is traditionally cultivated in Provence and the Cote d'Azur (France). Its fruit is very large (up to 50 kg), highly ornamental, juicy, with bright orange flesh, delicate taste, very fragrant, musky and delicious. It is used in gratins, soups, purees, pastries, etc. Flowers are traditionnally used in delicious donuts. They are highly valued by foraging insects and ants, as a rich source of pollen and nectar. The seed is edible and delicious raw or grilled, and has deworming properties. It is a source of edible oil. Very vigorous and fast growing, The Musk squash of Provence has a very ornamental foliage, mottled with silver spots on franc green background. It needs a rich soil well amended with manure, always fresh, and lots of sun and heat to thrive and grow, as well as long summers to ripen its huge fruits. It is therefore recommended to start your seedlings early in March-April in warm soil, and then transplant in place in May when the risk of frost is no longer to be feared. In cooler regions, it is best to grow it in a greenhouse or you will not get tasty fruits. Harvest as late as possible before the first frost. Mulch generously the plants footing with weeds or grass clippings in late spring. Requires a lot of space to expand. Here is one of the best culinary cucurbits. 1 packet of 15 seeds.
