Secale cereale var. Champagnerbrot - Rye - Seeds, 1 packet
Rye is a rustic cereal traditionally cultivated on acidic and poor soils, for its seed from which flour, oil, malt, and germ are produced, as well as for its straw.
Secale cereale can also be cultivated as a green manure, for cleaning a surface from weeds by suffocating them with its dense vegetation and root network, and to stabilize a soil.
It is also a very beautiful ornamental grass, with its drooping spikes with long beards and its bluish vegetation, and particularly the tall variety offered here, which allows to compose high colorful volumes at the back of flower beds.
Rye has Anticancer and Laxative medicinal properties.
The Champagnerbrot variety is an ancient variety, with tall stubble, long spikes, fleshy grains, very high yield, which was cultivated both for seed and straw.
Despite its size, it resists well to winds and its sturdy stem won't break - except in extreme weather.
Sow in September or October, directly in place, on prepared, poor and acidic soil, in an open position, well exposed to the sun, covering the seeds slightly to prevent the birds from eating them, then tamp the soil.
The seeds germinate quickly with the autumn rains on a still warm soil.
The plant spreads out slowly throughout the winter, forming tufts from which the tall stems will grow in spring.
Flowering in June.
Harvest in July after complete drying of stubble and spikes.
