Fabaceae. Eastern North America. H 1.5m x L 0.6m. Z3. Deciduous Perennial. Nitrogen fixing plant. Blue wild indigo (also called Blue false indigo) is not a lupine (Lupinus) but a Baptisia. Superb plant with bluish leaves becoming soft green with time, growing in dense clumps topped with spikes of purple meliferous flowers blooming continuously from June to August. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. A blue dye can be extracted from the plant. Baptisia australis also has medicinal properties despite its toxicity: Antiemetic, Aperitif, Digestive, Emetic, Purgative.

Sow the seeds in spring in godets and transplant in the garden in summer or fall. Baptisia australis will start blooming on its second year and then again each year more and more. Baptisia australis hates being disturbed when installed, and will grow back every year from its stump more and more vigorously. Grow Baptisia australis in deep soil for allowing the plant to establish its strong roots, well drained, neutral or acidic pH, full sun exposure. A very hardy and very easy perennial, absolutely not invasive, and very beautiful. 1 packet of 0.35g (20 seeds).
