Details

Cedronella canariensis is an aromatic plant from Mediterranean climates, with a very powerful, pleasant resinous scent, reminiscent of cedar and camphor

It is a Lamiaceae, therefore a cousin of Lemon Balm, Mint, Oregano, or Basil

The Balm of Gilead is a non-hardy plant that must be protected from frost in winter
It will grow back each spring and form rapidly large tufts with tender green vegetation

At the top of the stems populated with trifoliate and tender-green leaves appear all summer long, dense spikes with candy-pink flowers, contrasting nicely with the green foliage

Balm of Gilead is used in perfumery, potpourri, incense, and herb tea

Cultivation

Grow Cedronella in full sun and shelter from frost
Robust, vigorous and easy plant, rarely found in nursery catalogs

Sow in April-May, and start like basil
Germination is slow and erratic because the seed needs a lot of sun and heat to germinate

Transplant outside in June or plant in a large pot
