Polygonaceae. Western Europe. H 1.5m x W 0.6m. Z4 to Z8. Perennial. Large and beautiful wild plant of the Sorrel family, commonly found in meadows and grassy areas where it indicates moist and packed soil. It is also a garden weed and a problem in agriculture. Its large, bright green leaves, gathered in a rosette, emerge from the ground in spring. The flower stalk can reach 1.5 m. It bears a multitude of small flowers united in whorls which give rise to triangular fruits (achenes) often taking a pretty pink hue before maturity. The taproot of the plant branches out with age. Its bright yellow flesh contains bactericidal, fungicidal and insect and rodent repellants. Rumex obtusifolius has medicinal properties, among others: Soothing, Astringent, Healing, Contraceptive, Laxative, and Purifying. It has also been used in cooking for soups. It is an interesting dyeing plant, from which one can draw a whole range of very beautiful pastel hues, wash and light fast: Yellows with the root, Apricots, Salmons and Terracottas with the fresh seeds, Mustards and Ochers with the mix of all aerial parts of the plant. Sow in spring directly in place. Unless sowing in heavy, moist and tightly packed soil, the seeds will remain dormant. 1 packet of 20 seeds
