Brassicaceae. Central Asia, Naturalized in Europe. H1.5m x L1.5m. Z4 to Z8. Biennial. Fast-growing plant with a taproot, which thrives on dry soils, wasteland, stony terrain, etc. in open exposure and full sun. The leaves are smooth, broad, brittle, pure green, united in a rosette at ground level the first year, elongated, small, coriaceous, blueish-green, arranged helically one per node along the flower stems, in the second year. The spectacular flowering occurs very early in spring and ends quickly. The flowers, small but very abundant, are gathered in majestic panicles 1.5m tall. Flowers each have 4 green sepals and 4 bright yellow petals, the combination of the two colors giving the panicle a very fresh and pleasant color. Flowering is quickly followed by an abundance of brown fruits (pods) which contain the seeds. The fruits hang gracefully over the entire panicle and give it a decorative aspect. Woad is a honey plant very attractive to bees, comparable to rapeseed. It has some medicinal properties: Antibacterial, Antiviral, Astringent, and Anticancer. Isatis tinctoria is a source of Indigotin. In Western Europe, Woad has been cultivated on a large scale since the Middle Ages, as a source of blue pigment and as a blue dye. It was already known to the Celtic tribes of northern Europe for this purpose, as well as to the Romans and other People of the Empire. Compared to other indigoferous plants, this hardy plant can be cultivated in cold climates where other sources of indigo will not grow. Sow the seeds in early spring, directly in place, by dispersing the pods in a fairly spaced way (large plants) on clean and worked soil, and bury them lightly by scratching the surface of the soil with a rake. The leaves are harvested to produce Indigotine in June and July (for the best indigo) of the first year only. Several methods exist to obtain the color : Read this article to learn more. 1 packet of 30 pods
