Details

Pretty small climbing, trailing plant living in regions with a dry tropical climate and a Mediterranean climate in southern Africa

Heart-shaped, fleshy leaves, decorated with silvery veins, attach in pairs along filiform stems that can reach 2m

The stems grow from a whitish tuberous stem which serves as a water reserve and survival organ during the dry season

Old stems can produce pea-sized tubers at each node, which allow the plant to spread

Tubular flowers characteristic of this botanical family, pink and purple, appear in summer for several weeks on plants grown in good conditions

Eventually, the flowers give way to a horned fruiting body, which releases flying seeds a few months later

Cultivation

The Chain of Hearts survives in a wide range of conditions and is particularly resistant: Its fleshy leaves and tubers allow it to withstand lack of water

Strong sunlight will give the leaves a very decorative purplish underside, while in a shaded situation, they will remain green

Regular water supplies, light, heat, and a little fertilizer in the watering will make Ceropegia woodii grow quickly

Ceropegia woodii is generally grown as an indoor plant, to create graceful pots, hung in front of a window

But in summer the plant can be grown outdoors

Ceropegia woodii needs a resting period of a few months, during which watering can be completely suspended

It will then lose its leaves and stems, only to grow back from the tuber when conditions become favorable again

Be careful not to rot the tuber during the vegetative rest (reduce watering significantly)

-

Multiplication

During the summer, cut the stems into sections of 10 cm

Easy rooting in a glass of water within 2 weeks, before planting them in a pot, in potting soil which will be kept moist during recovery

Seeds can also be sown in spring

Young plants from cuttings and seedlings are grown like adult plants
