Detail

Geum urbanum is a forgotten medieval plant which received a lot of consideration and which is to be rediscovered

Its roots have an aroma of cloves and cinnamon

They were once used as a spice to flavor beers and soups

Geum urbanum is a botanical species without much ornamental interest

It has medicinal properties: Anti-diarrheal, Anti-inflammatory, Antiseptic, Aromatic, Astringent, Diaphoretic, Febrifuge, Stomachic, and Tonic

Wood Avens was commonly used to treat problems affecting the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus, inflammatory problems, and fevers

Cultivation

Sow in early March, in well-worked soil, moderately fertile, rich in organic matter, and cool, in a sunny position shaded from the sun during the hot hours of summer

Keep the seedling clean to give advantage to your Avens and avoid confusing them with weeds

A very easy-to-grow plant, to have in your medicinal plant patch

Control seed production by cutting off flower stalks as soon as they appear

Achenes cling so well to clothing and animal feathers and hair that they would be scattered throughout the garden in a blink of an eye

My friendly advice to avoid weeding work in subsequent years

How to Harvest Roots

Harvest Wood Avens' roots from plants older than 1 year (the older the plant, the more developed its root system)

Harvest should be done at the end of winter, in February or March, just before the plant starts

It is only at this time of year that the roots have their scent of cloves mixed with cinnamon and can be used as a spice

Wash and Sort the Roots, cut them into small sections, and dry them quickly in a warm place before storing in this form or pulverized for later use

You can avoid killing the plants by cut their roots not closer to 2cm below the crown, and replant them for a new crop next year
