Details

Chasmanthium latifolium is a very beautiful grass, with large soft green leaves reminiscent of some bamboos.
Thin stems emerge each year from a rhizomatous stump.
During summer, flat ears appear in drooping panicles at the top of the stems.

The plant has a slender habit at first, then gracefully bending as the ears grow and mature.
Green stems can be harvested for stunning dry bouquets, or after the plant has changed color in the fall.

Cultivation

Indian Woodoats likes cool soils, and does best in a shady position, protected from intense sun during the hottest hours of the day - this is not a full sun plant.
In early spring, sow 4 or 5 seeds together in pots, in good soil, 0.5 cm deep.
Tamp lightly, then water.
Place in a bright spot and keep moist.
When the seedlings are 10-15 cm tall, plant in their final location in the garden.
Water regularly on the first couple of weeks, as well as in summer drought periods.
Weed regularly if needed.
Easy to grow, adapting to a wide range of soils.
Non-invasive, spontaneous sowing is extremely rare, does not sucker.
