Detail

Pattypan is a kind of zucchini in the species Curcurbita pepo var. ovifera, annual, non-running but growing longer and thinner stems than zucchini

The ripe fruit measures up to 25cm in diameter and weighs 500g to 1kg

It has a very original shape and can be used as a Colocynth for interior decoration in winter, especially since the orange color of this variety is beautiful and lively
(several varieties exist: with white, orange, green, or variegated white-green fruit)

Pattypan is delicious, with tighter flesh than zucchini, and aromas reminiscent of artichoke

It is eaten very young, just formed, cooked like zucchini
(gratin, fried, steamed, etc.)

Cultivation

Grow Pattypan squash like a Zucchini

Sow in April in the nursery in pots, in potting soil, burying the seed 1-2cm deep, 1 seed per pot

Keep the soil moist and expose to the sun

Germination is fast above 22°C

Grow the seedlings under cover until the end of the last frost and plant in their final location in your vegetable garden

You can also sow directly in place when frosts are no longer to be feared

Choose a clear, sunny location, clean and well-worked soil, generously amended with manure compost

In summer, water as necessary to avoid water stress on plants and maintain productivity

Harvest the squash as they form, very young, within a few days after flowering

If you wait too long, the skin becomes tough and must be removed, while seeds start forming and must also be removed

Disease-free, pest-free

Good to Know

If you regularly harvest the Pattypan squash as they grow, the plant will continue to produce more constantly

If you allow Pattypan Squash to ripen, the plant will stop producing, as long as it bears a fruit
