Details
Lupinus perennis, the Sundial Lupine, is a perennial botanical lupine native to western North America (including Canada)
It is different from the Russel's Lupine (the garden lupine)
Very hardy since it also grows in Newfoundland, Lupinus perennis forms a tuft of digitate leaves characteristic of Lupines, soft green, from a perennial tuberous stump
In spring, majestic inflorescences emerge, reaching 1.5m in height, covered with flowers which bloom uninterruptedly for several weeks
The papilionaceous flower of the Perennial Lupine is generally purple, but some plants of this variable species have lighter, darker, or even pink flowers
Very capable on poor soil, because Lupines are atmospheric nitrogen-fixing plants

Cultivation
Sow in spring in pots and transplant into the ground, full sun, when the plant can be handled
The Perennial Lupine sets quickly and for years, until it forms truly spectacular tall clumps
Flowering may start on the year of sowing but will truly show from the 2nd year
Non-invasive (seeds are produced in abundance, but consumed by animals as well as young seedlings)
